Questions? Ask the Vet!

Why won’t my cat jump up on the couch anymore? Why will my dog eat some foods, but turn his nose away at others?

Ask the veterinarians at Southwoods Animal Hospital! We’re always happy to answer general questions regarding pets and veterinary care.

In the event of an emergency, call your veterinarian immediately. These questions will not be answered right away and are not intended to diagnose or treat any urgent cases.

Q: I can not bathe or groom my dog. He simply will not let me. Even muzzled he is insanely aggressive. Does Southwoods sedate animals to groom them? If so, how much would it be to get him done? He is about 7.5lbs. Not bathing or grooming him is neglectful. I don’t know what to do or where to go.

A:
Some dogs just don’t appreciate being groomed – you are definitely not alone! We can certainly examine and sedate your little guy so that our groomer, Meagan, can get him all clean and trimmed up for you. All pets that will stay in our hospital for the day need to be up-to-date on Distemper/Parvo, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines so we will need to know if he’s due for these immunizations. Please call our office so we can put together an estimate.”

Q: What is your typical workday like?
A:
Most days are a combination of performing surgeries and seeing patients in appointments. We see a mixture of wellness visits and sick pets.
Q: What do you like most (and least) about your job?
A:
It is great helping pets and their families. Euthanasia is truly a gift when done appropriately but it is a very emotional and hard part of our job. Another struggle involves pets that can be cured but finances come into play.
Q: What skills/abilities are most important to succed in this job?
A:
Communication skills and problem-solving skills.
Q: What is your educational background?
A:
Bachelor’s degree followed by a doctorate in veterinary medicine.
Q: How did you get started in this field?
A:
A lifelong love for animals pushed me to become a veterinarian.
Q: What courses were most helpful to you and which would you recommend?
A:
Math and science classes.
Q: What is the best way to get started in this field?
A:
Study hard and volunteer or get a job in a hospital.
Q: Do you have any additional advice to help me prepare?
A:
Stay focused and keep your grades up.
Q: My beagle Chloe is a patient there and here in the past week or so she has had some type of cough. maybe Kennel cough? what can I do to cure it? do I need to bring her in? She is almost 10 years old. it’s like a hacking sound then she tries to throw up but doesn’t but she has thrown up 2xs and its like a yellow color. Please help….Thanks!
A:
Anna – Thank you for your inquiry. We’re sorry Chloe isn’t feeling well. There are numerous things that can cause a dog to cough, especially in older patients. We strongly recommend that we examine Chloe to better characterize her cough. Once we perform an exam, we will develop a treatment plan. Hopefully we can see Chloe soon and get this cough addressed.
Very best wishes-
